After half term, Year 3 took part in a magnets and forces themed science week to enhance their learning opportunities. Throughout the week, the children learnt about many scientific concepts and were able to practice a variety of skills during experiments.
Whilst learning about magnets, Year 3 explored the strength of different types of magnets, set up their own magnets investigation and learnt about how magnets attract and repel one another. By the end of the week, Year 3 were able to discuss their ideas about magnets and link this to the magnetic field within the earth.
At the end of the week, the children learnt about the force of friction and how this can affect activities they do daily. Setting up their own friction experiments, the children aimed to find out whether changing the surface a toy car runs down, affects the amount of friction exerted on the vehicle. By the end of their observations, the children were able to conclude that a rough surface exerts more friction than a soft surface and they were beginning to make links to this learning within the real world (e.g. different shoe soles).
