As part of our curriculum development this year we have immersed the whole school in a topic learning about the centenary of the end of World War 1. We have been researching the names of the soldiers from Pokesdown who are named on the war memorial in the peace garden, reading poetry, thinking about loss and sacrifice and much more besides. We still have a couple of weeks left and the engagement of the children has been lovely to see across the Academy. On Monday 12th November we held our own Remembrance Service around the memorial, with ‘Abide With Me’ sung by the choir, Reverend John leading the Worship, the oldest girl and youngest boy laying the wreath and some poetry as well. At 11am a bugler played the Last Post and the Reveille, either side of an impeccably observed 2 minute silence.
Over the course of the project we are intending for an art installation to grow along the eastern wall of the school hall that will remain in place until the summer holiday to remind us of all that we learned. We began this installation with a silhouette out of which our poppies will grow.
To the 66 men whose names we have tried to honour and respect, we will remember you and all those you served alongside.
