Year 5 have been lucky enough to enjoy a 6 week session of orienteering, where they have learnt the skills of map reading, setting compass points and understanding map keys.  All this hard work resulted in an exciting orienteering competition at Kings Park on the Thursday morning before half term led by Mr Falconer.

He set up control points around the park and each pair of children were given a ‘dibber’ to wear on their finger.  On reading the map correctly, the children then set off to find each point as quickly as they could, returning to Mr Falconer to receive their timings.  This proved to be very exciting and lots of competitive rivalry developed between the classes.

By the end of the course, the children had run a distance of 1.5km!

There are lots of permanent orienteering courses all around the local area and the routes can be found at this website and the maps downloaded for free.
