On the penultimate day of the Spring term, Year 6 were lucky to meet Ros Birch, the Education Outreach Officer for the Houses of Parliament. This was a superb opportunity to learn more about politics and democracy from a real expert.
Our exciting morning started with a workshop explaining why laws are important, how they are made and we then debated ideas for a new law. Our budding MPs had many ideas, with Ros visibly impressed with the maturity of our children.
Our second workshop was all about campaigning for change and explaining how young people can have a voice. Year 6 considered the impact of historical campaigns, recognising that different campaign methods have different benefits and weaknesses. Then to finish off our fantastic morning of learning, the children were able to put their knowledge to the test and planned their own campaign! Look out Mr Payne for some new ideas coming your way!
Ros’ visit was also preparation for Year 6’s exciting future project…watch this space!
