This half term, before the Coronavirus lockdown, Year 4 have been learning the impact of palm oil in our topic ‘Our Precious Planet!’ The children have become very passionate about putting a stop to palm oil production as it leads to deforestation and animals habitats being destroyed.

Whilst researching about palm oil, we watched the famous ‘Iceland’ advert regarding the production of palm oil and after a group discussion we decided to write persuasive letters to some major supermarkets trying to reduce the products that contain this. Can you believe that 1 in 10 products on the supermarket shelves contain palm oil?

Two of the letters were chosen from each class to be sent to Sainsbury’s HQ. This provided a real purpose for our writing and the children who wrote the winning letters even walked to the postbox to deliver them!

Amazingly, we were lucky enough to get a response from the company! They were very impressed with our passionate letters and were able to explain how they ensure their products come from sustainable sources. You can see a full copy of the letter received below.

Writing a letter is a real life skill and it has been amazing for the children to see the whole process of drafting and writing a letter, stamping an envelope and posting it in a letter box to finally receiving a response. This has been a truly purposeful learning adventure for our team.
