Year 5
Week beginning 13th October 2025
Our project for this half-term is 'Ancient Greece'.
What an amazing week we’ve had in Year 5! The children have demonstrated brilliant effort and enthusiasm in every subject, from inventing their own mythical characters in English to taking on new problem-solving challenges in Maths Mastery. In history, we learned how the Ancient Greeks introduced democracy and discussed how voting continues to shape our world today. During geography, the class explored Greece’s impressive landscape and discovered that Mount Olympus is the country’s tallest peak. The children also developed their digital skills in computing by learning how to organise and search for information in a database. It has been a busy and enjoyable week filled with creativity, curiosity, and teamwork—fantastic work, Year 5!

Curriculum.
What an exciting week we have ahead in Year 5! In English, we’ll continue exploring the world of Greek mythology by developing our own imaginative mythical characters and writing descriptive narratives inspired by these ancient stories. In reading, we’ll carry on with Who Let the Gods Out, deepening our understanding of the characters through discussion and drama activities. For spelling, we’ll keep working on our No Nonsense Spellings to improve accuracy and confidence.
In maths, we’ll move into Week 4 of Maths Mastery, tackling new problem-solving challenges and applying our learning to real-life situations.
In history, we’ll learn about fascinating creatures from Greek mythology and discover how the Ancient Greeks loved storytelling and theatre. In RE, we’ll focus on Salah—the second pillar of Islam—learning about the importance of prayer and reflection in Muslim life.
In computing, we’ll continue working with databases, learning how to search, sort, and represent data in different ways. In DT, the children will use levers and linkages to create their own mechanical characters, bringing their designs to life with moving parts.
In PSHE, we’ll continue to think critically about information online, learning how to spot bias and judge which sources are most trustworthy. In geography, we’ll build on our understanding of Greece’s landscapes and climate, while in French, we’ll keep practising how to order food and drinks confidently in a French café. Finally, in PE, we’ll focus on developing stamina, strength, and teamwork through fitness activities and games.
It’s shaping up to be a fun, creative, and inspiring week of learning in Year 5!
Other news:
-
PPA Days - PPA Days will be every other Tuesday, and children should come in wearing PE kits.
- PE every Thursday - Children should wear their PE kits every Tuesday.
Homework:
- Please find links to the relevant information below for the Project Overview and Homework.
- MyMaths - (This is still to be set up for this term) We will set up MyMaths tasks termly, based on the learning we will be doing this term. Please let us know if you are finding them too easy or tricky, and remember that below, there are many resources you can use to extend your learning from home. Various MyMaths activities have been set for this term. This is to allow children who like to do more to be able to. However, children do not have to complete all the MyMaths activities. One per week is our minimum recommendation.
- Reading books - we would like to remind everyone to have a reading book in school - this can be a school or home book. We want all children to be able to share recommendations and reviews of what we have read recently. We display books we've read in the classroom to get children talking about the stories they love and inspire others to try new titles.
- Reading records - All children should now have a grey reading record in which they can record how often they are reading. They will receive one raffle ticket if they read three times a week and two if they read more than five. At the end of each term, we will draw a raffle to win a trip to Costa. You have to be in it to win it! Activities in the reading records can be completed at home for fun!
Reading:
We are reading 'Who Let The Gods Out' by Maz Evans and using the following Designation Reader sentence stems to start our answers this term. We focus on different skills in each lesson: inferring, predicting, asking questions, evaluating, clarifying, summarising, and making connections.
Spellings:
Our spellings for this term are below. However, we are moving away from weekly tests, using more discreet learning techniques, and applying our spelling words across our curriculum.
Best wishes,
Year 5 Team
