Allsorts of science!

Who knew liquorice could make for such a fascinating science lesson?!

Throughout this term, Year 6 have been learning about animal classification.  We have studied the work of Carl Linnaeus and leaned that organisms belong to a taxonomy of subgenres.

A common method for classifying organisms is through the use of a classification key.  Through this, scientists determine the species of animal through a series of yes/no questions which eventually leads to a singular definition of the inherent characteristics of an animal or species.

Now, as much as we would love to have conducted this lesson with live animals, unfortunately this was not possible.  So, we thought, why not use liquorice allsorts?!  They come in so many different shapes, sizes and colours that they make for perfect stimuli to separate through classification keys!

It was a brilliant lesson and it enabled us to explore this fundamental concept in a fun, excitig (and delicious/disgusting, depending on your opinion of liquorice!) way, ensuring learning was deepened and there were smiles all round.
