Super Smoothies in Year 1!

As part of our exciting project, Friends, Families and Fantastic Bodies, we’ve been exploring how to keep our bodies happy and healthy. In Design & Technology, the children have been on a delicious learning journey- taste-testing shop-bought smoothies, discussing their flavours and then designing their very own recipes. Over the past few weeks, they’ve mixed creativity with nutrition, culminating in making their own homemade smoothies together!
Earlier this term, the excitement was bubbling as soon as the children discovered they would be making smoothies! For weeks, we’ve had eager faces asking, “Is it smoothie day yet?” and at last, the big day finally arrived!
In preparation, the children explored seasonal fruits and vegetables, learning not only how these foods help our bodies but also how choosing seasonal produce can be kind to the environment. They enjoyed drawing their favourite fruits and matching them to the seasons in which they grow.
Next came a fun taste-testing session! The children sampled three different fruity smoothies, working in groups to discuss flavours and guess the ingredients. Once the ingredients were revealed, each group planned their own smoothie recipe, carefully choosing two fruits and a base liquid.
When smoothie day arrived, the enthusiasm was wonderful to see. After practising safe cutting techniques, the children used child-safe knives to chop their fresh ingredients and worked together to add everything into the blender. There were lots of smiles and giggles as they watched the ingredients whirl into colourful, tasty smoothies!
Finally, it was time to taste and evaluate their creations. There were plenty of thumbs up and a few thoughtful thumbs down, which led to great discussions about how they might improve their recipes next time.
This has been a fantastic learning experience, full of teamwork, creativity, and healthy choices. Well done, Bourne and Stour - we are so proud of you!
