Fractions.  Even the word sends shivers down many adults' spines.  It is a notoriously difficult concept to master and there are so many people who may struggle with understanding the key concepts of fractions throughout their life.  But... not our Year 6s!

Last week, the children were set a task to represent their understanding and thinking through creating their very own fraction walls.  A lot of key learning underpinned this... equivalences, division, observation, collaboration and a very concrete understanding that a fraction is an equal part of a whole.

It was a lesson that could have gone one of two ways, but we are delighted with the results.  The children now have a very visual guide of what a fraction is and have since gone on to apply this knowledge to comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting fractions.  None of this would be possible if they did not understand this key representation of what a fraction is.

Fractions... easy!
